Joy and happiness are words that people use interchangeably, myself included. Lately, however, God has been showing me that these are not only two different words, but two different actions. Happiness is circumstantial, while joy is a choice. Happiness is the expression of something good happening, while joy is a state of being that you have to consciously choose.

“That which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.” 1 John 1:3-4

The only way our joy can be complete is when we are in fellowship with Jesus. True joy does not occur outside fellowship with Jesus. If there is one thing that should convince you to develop a relationship with Him, let it be this.

This has been a challenging lesson to swallow. Specifically, it has been difficult to be happy during the season I am in. A 21 year season of singleness. There has been questioning of what the heck He is doing. There has been anger and resentment towards Him for having me in this season. I have struggled seeing the point of this season. I was not happy because of my circumstances. But, praise Jesus, I have been realizing that I don’t have to know the reasons, but I do need to trust Him. I need  to choose joy. Although choosing joy can be hard, I have realised that my circumstances do not determine what type of Father He is.

He is good. He is steadfast. He is love. He is joy.

Because of that, I will continue to choose joy and put my trust in His hands, because He will never let me down. Find something to rejoice in today and choose joy!
