You Need Jesus

I was on Tik Tok the other day and saw a video of this guy talking about some of his recent relationships, and I just thought “Man, this guy needs Jesus!” You may have thought that too when hearing someone’s story or what they’re going through, or even if you just look at the world around us. 

If you are a Christian, I hope you think that on a regular basis. The more we understand our sin, the more we realize just how desperately we need Jesus.

But if you’re not a Christian, you probably don’t know what that means. You probably read or hear it, and think it’s just another Christian slang. 

Although it may sound like another Christian slang or buzz phrase, it actually is one of the most important statements a person can truly understand, so let’s dive in.

We live in a very broken world, and by that, I mean a world made up of broken people. You and I, and every other person in the world is broken. We were born into sin, yes even the most holy or righteous person you know is sinful - Romans 5:12 says, “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.” The one man was Adam (and Eve), and ever since, the world has been sin-ridden. 

You may not need a Bible verse to tell you that there is brokenness all around us. Look at war, famine, incurable diseases, greed and so on. It’s literally everywhere. These are all the effects of sin. And behind that brokenness is a very real enemy. Scripture tells us that satan prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). 1 John 3:8 says, “Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning…” 

It’s also very important to understand that being “good” does not wipe out your sins. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Isaiah 64:6 says that “our righteous acts are like filthy rags.” The standard of “good” is God, you are not God, therefore you are not good. There is nothing you can do to wipe out your own sins. 

I want to hold your hands when I say this, you are not enough. 

There aren't enough self-help books you could read, enough inner peace you could find, or enough good deeds you could do to blot out your sin. You are a broken human being. 

Ok, so let’s see where we’re at… the world is broken, because we are broken, because we were born into sin, because of satan. So where does Jesus come into the picture? 

Well Jesus is first referenced in Genesis 3!! God already had a plan for this brokenness in chapter 3 of a 1189 chapter book. God’s sovereign will was put into motion thousands of years before Jesus was even born. He had a plan to redeem sinners from Adam and Eve, to Moses, to Peter, to you and me. From generation to generation, He had a plan to wash away the sins of the world. 

His plan was to send His one and only Son, Jesus, to live the perfect life we never could and die the death we deserved, becoming the once-for-all sacrifice for our sins. He was born of a virgin, perfectly God and completely man. After three years of His ministry, He was betrayed by one of His disciples for thirty pieces of silver and handed over to the authorities. Jesus then willingly endured the punishment we deserved. Out of His great love for us, He endured to the end, knowing that the joy and glory to come far outweighed the temporary suffering. Finally, He was nailed to a cross, breathed His last breath, and became the only acceptable, complete and eternal sacrifice for our sins. He took on all of the sins of the world, past, present and future, and three days later He rose from the dead victorious. Victorious over satan, sin and death!! This sacrifice and victory from the God of the universe, the King of kings, Lord of lords made it possible for us to receive forgiveness of sin and to spend eternity with Him (John 3:16).

That is what I mean when I say, "You need Jesus." It's not an insult, and it's not saying you're worse than everyone else. It's simply an acknowledgment that every single one of us stands in the exact same place apart from Christ. We all need the same Savior.

You are not enough, but He is. 

And what a relief that is! The Gospel isn't another burden to carry, it's the freedom of laying your burdens at the feet of Christ. We no longer have to rely on our broken selves, but can rely on the total and complete forgiveness from our Savior. A Savior who is steadfast and never changes. I will gladly boast that I am not enough because I can boast in a Savior who is.

When I was in college, I attended a fraternity induction and one of the members shared the Gospel. At the end, he said, “not making a choice is a choice.” Although I was already saved, that hit me. That was powerful. And it still holds true. 

Revelation 3:20 says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” What a God! A God who comes to us, and seeks us out! You may be acting in total rebellion of His commandments, yet He stands at the door and knocks. Are you going to answer, or are you going to stay where you’re at?

The invitation is simple: repent of your sins, place your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and follow Him. Salvation isn't earned, it's received by grace through faith.

I need Jesus. You need Jesus. The world needs Jesus.
