Why Wait?

I wrote this in the summer of 2025 while scrolling Pinterest looking for bedroom inspiration.

Jesus sitting next to an empty stool with the caption "He Will Wait."

This picture caught my eye and at first, I thought “how sweet!” I was reminded of Bible verses like Revelation 3:20 “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me” and Isaiah 30:18 “The LORD waits for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the LORD is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for Him to help them.”

Those verses reminded me of the patience and graciousness of our Father. But they also led me to ask a question… How long will He wait? How long until you don’t have the luxury of waiting? And should we even wait to come to the Lord?

The answer is that we don’t have forever to come to Him. In reality, we don’t know when our last day will be and when we stand before Him, we will either hear the words, “well done thy good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21) or “depart from me for I have never known you” (Matthew 7:23). We also don’t know when Jesus’ second coming will be. The Bible says Jesus doesn’t even know, just God the Father (Matthew 24:36). It will happen in a twinkling of an eye and we will join all the saints (1 Corinthians 15:52). Are you willing to wait? Are you willing to gamble when your last breath will be to put your faith and salvation in the hands of Jesus?

One of the most impactful quotes I heard about salvation was at a fraternity induction in college. One of the fraternity members got the mic to share the Gospel with everyone there. He ended it with “not making a choice is a choice.” It was simple but how true is that?! Choosing to put off your salvation is a choice, and it’s choosing to ignore the precious gift Jesus is giving to us freely.

God’s invitation is gracious, but it isn't open indefinitely. There will be a day where all of us will face Him, and there will be a day where every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:10).

To answer the question on if we should wait, the resounding answer should be “no!” All that we have is because of Him. We should respond with humility, thankfulness and a desire to be drawn in closer to Him. The following list doesn’t even begin to cover all that He has done for us but just get a glimpse of His goodness -

Every good and perfect gift is from above (James 1:17).

The creator of the universe knew you before you were in your mother’s womb (Jeremiah 1:5).

He has called you by name (Isaiah 43:1).

You are created in His image (Genesis 1:27).

He loved you SO much that He endured a brutal beating and eventually died on a cross, defeated sin and death, and three days later raised Himself from the dead so that you could be saved from sin! (John 3:16)

Our lives should be a reflection of what He has done and should be an outpouring of praise - just read the Psalms if you need some inspiration.

C.S. Lewis captures this tension beautifully in Mere Christianity:

“... He is going to land by force; we do not know when. But we can guess why He is delaying. He wants to give us the chance of joining His side freely… Now, today, this moment, is our chance to choose the right side. God is holding back to give us that chance. It will not last forever. We must take it or leave it.”

So, yes God has given us free will to either choose Him or not. And yes, He will wait, but not forever.

But why wait? Why wait until life falls apart? Why wait until you feel like you have figured life out? Why wait until you feel like all questions have been answered?

Maybe you’re wrestling with the claims of Jesus, and what His great sacrifice means for you and your eternal soul. Please reach out to me, or a trusted friend that has put their faith in Jesus to talk through these questions and doubts. God is not afraid of your questions.

But I want to echo what I heard at the fraternity induction - not making a choice is a choice.

Read the Gospel below and ask yourself if the Lord of the Universe is worth putting off until it is convenient for you.

His plan was to send His one and only Son, Jesus, to live the perfect life we never could and die the death we deserved, becoming the once-for-all sacrifice for our sins. He was born of a virgin, perfectly God and completely man.

After three years of His ministry, He was betrayed by one of His disciples for thirty pieces of silver and handed over to the authorities. Jesus then willingly endured the punishment we deserved. Out of His great love for us, He endured to the end, knowing that the joy and glory to come far outweighed the temporary suffering.

Finally, He was nailed to a cross, breathed His last breath, and became the only acceptable, complete and eternal sacrifice for our sins. On the cross, He bore the sins of the world, making a way for anyone who repents and places their faith in Him to be forgiven, and three days later He rose from the dead victorious.

Victorious over satan, sin and death!

This sacrifice and victory from the God of the universe, the King of kings, Lord of lords made it possible for us to receive forgiveness of sin and to spend eternity with Him (John 3:16).

If today is the day you want to surrender your life to Jesus, don't wait. Turn from your sin, place your faith in Him, and begin walking with the One who gave everything to save you. Today is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2)!

So, is that worth waiting for?
